Kauai Day Two

Day two...what a trip! We started out by going on a boat tour of the Na Pali coast. This is a very famous geological location because the cliffs are so dramatic. Not only are they insanely steep and shaped in such amazing ways, but they are covered in plants making them so beautiful! Needless to say we were stoked to go on the tour, and as we hoped...

...we ran into dolphins! Almost straight off, there they were, right near our boat. These are spinner dolphins. Unfortunately we caught no pictures of them spinning in the air, but that is just what they do. Lovely!

A little further up the coast we could just barely make out a monk seal! Melissa had been hoping, wishing, waiting to see a monk seal our whole Hawaii stay. She could have lived with a closer encounter, but hey...at least you can see a tiny gray blob in the distance.

The landscape was just so crazy cool...a waterfall in every nook and cranny, and the water was to die for! So different from the island we'd been on before.
This arch was used in a couple movies, including the new King Kong. Jack Black bought a house somewhere nearby because he fell in love with the island during filming...must be awful to be able to just buy a house anywhere you please.

Here's the boat...Mom is in there somewhere...
Before we went in to shore all the way we got to stop in a spot for some snorkeling. The water was so, so crazy greenish-blue...the color some exotic, precious jewel should be if it could be. We saw some cool stuff including...
...a crown of thorns...
...these cool black fish that we never saw on Oahu...
...other random creepy things...

...and oh my gosh! What the heck is that!!???!! Oh wait...I think he was on the boat with us...

Jo Jo's...the SECOND best place in the four islands to get shave ice. Ok, well, we've only been to three, but while Matsumoto's is still the champ, Jo Jo's did have a lot of interesting flavors, like chocolate and butterscotch, and other things you only thought belonged on vanilla ice cream.

Last main attraction for the day was the Waimea Canyon. Truly a marvelous crack in the earth! Really, it was very, very pretty and monsterous. Seemed strange there was such a huge, uncommon thing on such a small island. Very cool though.

And, in order for everyone to experience the true Hawaii, just put yourself in the place of Melissa. Chickens in Hawaii are like flies in dog crap...they're everywhere! And, as if that isn't enough, they were all blown crazy by some hurricane several years back, and now the roosters crow any time they want. Our vendetta against chickens (bred when we lived in our studio apartment and hens/roosters/chicks loved to convene under our window starting at 2 or 3 in the morning) actually had nothing to do with the antics seen in this video...we just think it's fun chasing chickens!
